Prophet Muhammad in the Torah

Prophet Muhammad in the Torah

Proofs and prophesies in the Torah

The Torah includes many proofs, testimonies and prophesies that verify the truth of Prophet Muhammed’s call and his Message, and that he is the seal of the Messengers and the one who was sent as a mercy to the world. These proofs include: • Genesis 16: 8-12: [‘Oh Hajar, Sarah’s slave, where have you come from? And where are you going?’ She answered, ‘I am running from my mistress Sarah.’ The Lord’s angel said to her, ‘Return to your mistress and submit to her.’ The Lord’s angel continued, ‘I will increase your progeny to the extent that they will be too numerous to count them.’ The Lord’s angel added, ‘Behold, you are now pregnant and will give birth to a son called Ishmael (Ismail) (meaning: Allah hears), as the Lord heard your calls of distress. He will be a hardy Beduoin by nature, whose hand [of his progeny] will be against everyone, and everyone’s hand will be against him [his progeny, being warlike in nature]. He will live without friends, far from all his brothers.’] Ibn Qayyim commented on this saying, [It is known that the hands (i.e. position) of the tribe of Ismail (peace be upon him), before Prophet Muhammed was sent, were never above the hands (. e. position) of the tribe of Isaac (peace be upon him). In fact, the tribe of Isaac had Prophets and heavenly books. They also entered Egypt during the time of Prophet Joseph with Prophet Jacob (peace be upon them both), and the hands (position) of the tribe of Ismail were not over their hands (position) at that time. After Moses was sent to them, they left Egypt with Moses. The noblest men at the time were with Moses and no other hand (position) was over them. They remained like that when Joshua was with them until the time of David and the kingdom of Solomon, which was a kingdom who’s like none had been given before him. Consequently, the hands of the tribe of Ismail were not over them. Then Allah (Glorified is He) sent the Messiah, but they disbelieved in and denied him, and their denial resulted in their ruin.] [Their kingdom was also ruined and it never recovered after this. Allah spread them throughout the earth as scattered peoples, and they were controlled by the Roman and Persian Empires as well as other superpowers. But the hands (position) of the tribe of Ismail were still not over them at that time. In fact, the hands of the tribe of Ismail were not over any people until Allah sent Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him) with His Message, honouring him by making him a Prophet. As a result of sending the Prophet, the hands (position) of the tribe of Ismail were over many nations, and no sovereignty was left on the earth which was greater than their sovereignty. They overpowered the Persian and Roman Empires as well as the Turkic and Daylamite dynasties, and overpowered the Jews, Christians, Magians, Sabeans and idol worshippers. In this way, the explanations of the saying in the Torah, “And his hand will be over every group and every person,” becomes clear] [Comparative Religions by Ibn Al-Qayyim] • [In this way, I will raise for them a Prophet like you from their brethren. I will put My words in his mouth and he will tell them all that I command him] [Deutoronomy: 18]. Here the Jews are foretold about the prophethood of Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him), as a Prophet will come from the brethren of the Jews, and their brethren are Ismail and the Arabs who descended from him. Ismail, who is the one about whom the news of a Prophet coming from his progeny was revealed, was the father of the Arabs. The prophecy says, “From your brethren, like you.” If it meant a Prophet from the Jews, it would have said, “A Prophet from you.” However, it said, “From your brethren.” Moreover, the saying “like you” refers to the similarities between Moses (peace be upon him), to whom the saying is directed, and the Prophet (peace be upon him), who is similar and like him. Moses married, had children and also emigrated from the country of the disbelievers, but the Messiah was different from Moses; he did not marry. However, Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him) married, had children and emigrated from the country of the disbelievers to another city in order to establish faith there. Furthermore, Moses came with a particular Message, the Torah, and Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him) came with a particular Message, the Quran. Finally, Moses died in the same way all people die, and the same happened to Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him), but with regards to the Messiah, Allah raised him to Himself. • After this, there is a prophecy of Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him) in particular when he was given a script which he had to read, being told to, “Read this,” and him answering, “I cannot read as I am unlettered.” [Isaiah: 12] Those far and wide know that Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him) was unlettered (that is, he did not know how to read or write) Another prophecy is stated in one of the books of the Torah, [A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a branch will bear fruit] [Isaiah: 11] The text states, [Let the wilderness and its towns raise their voices; let the settlements where Kedar lives rejoice. Let the people of Sela sing for joy, let them shout from the mountaintops] [Isaiah: 42] This is a clear prophecy of Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him). It refers to the Arab land, which are the settlements in which Kedar, the son of Ismail, lived, asking them to rejoice. It also refers to the land to which the Prophet (peace be upon him) immigrated, Medinah, in the words, “Let the people of Sela sing for joy.” The word ‘Sela’ refers to ‘Sillah’, which is a mountain at the entrance of Medinah. It is still called the same name now. It is called ‘Sela’ in Hebrew. From this text we understand why the Jews settled in Medinah and the surrounding areas. They were certain that the seal of the Prophet will live in Medinah, the city whose sign is the mountain called Sela which is mentioned in their Torah, as the previous prophecy states, so they wished to be from there and among them. The Jewish scholars in Medinah and the surrounding areas knew the characteristics of the Prophet and that he would soon appear. This was also verified by Ibn Saad in his Tabaqat (collection of articles) with a complete chain of narrators until Ibn Abbas, who said, “The Jews of Qurayza, An-Nadir, Fadak and Khaybar knew the characteristics of the Prophet (peace be upon him) before he was sent as a Prophet, and that he would immigrate to Medinah” [The Grand Tabaqat]

A Jewish scholar describes Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him)

There is a Jewish scholar that mentioned how the Torah described the Prophet (peace be upon him) when Ibn Ayash asked him about this. It has been narrated by Ibn Ayash that he asked the scholar Kaab [a scholar of Jewish and Christian traditions] “What is the description of the Messenger in the Torah?” The scholar replied, “It is written that Muhammed ibn Abdullah will be born in Mecca and will immigrate to Tabah. His rule will cover Al-Sham (the area bordering the Eastern Mediterranean). He will not be immoral or one who wastes time in the markets, and he will not reply bad with bad, but he will forgive and forget. His nation will praise Allah much, praising Allah during all times of ease and magnifying Him over all the world. They perform ablution on their limbs, are in the habit of wearing an izar (a lower garment tied around the waist), and form rows when praying just as they form rows when fighting. The murmuring from their mosques is like the buzzing of bees. Their call to prayer is heard travelling through the sky.” The narrator explained, “He meant the call to Prayer” [related by Al-Bukhari] This description enabled them to recognize the Prophet (peace be upon him), as the description of the Prophet (peace be upon him) is so clear that only the stubborn ones who are presumptuous and ungrateful to Allah would deny him. This is the Prophet who was born in Mecca and immigrated to Tabbah, that is, Medinah. The Prophet (peace be upon him) called the city Tabbah due to the kindness of its inhabitants and the pleasant breeze it had. Allah liberated Al-Sham for us and Damascus became the capital of the Islamic caliphate. Then those far and wide testified in favour of the Prophet (peace be upon him), saying that “He was not immoral, did not waste time in the markets or reply bad with bad, but forgive and forget. Moreover, the Prophet (peace be upon him) taught his followers to praise Allah in ease and hardships, and taught them how to perform ablution and to pray, matching what Kaab Al-Habr said about him, “His nation praises Allah a lot, praising Him in all times of ease and magnifying Him everywhere. They perform ablution on their limbs and are in the habit of wearing an izar. They stand in rows when praying as they stand in rows when fighting. Their murmurings in the mosques are just like the buzzing of bees and their callers are heard throughout the sky.” The Jews knew when the Prophet (peace be upon him) would come, and the Prophet (peace be upon him) fit the description of him in their books. They used to even threaten the Arabs with his coming. But when this description fitted an Arab Prophet from the progeny of Ismail, and not from the progeny of Jacob the son of Isaac, they denied him. Why do you think they did this?
