Names of Prophet's daughters

The daughters of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)

1.Zainab bint Muhammad

Zainab was the oldest daughter of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Zainab was born ten years before the prophethood of Prophet Muhammed.

Zainab married Abu Al- ‘As ibn Ar-Rabee’a before Islam, but then entered Islam although her husband stayed an unbeliever. Zainab stayed with him in Mecca and had a son called Abdullah from him who died when he was young, and a daughter called Umamah. She did not immigrate to Medina with the Messenger (peace be upon him), but immigrated later.

Abu Al- ‘As left to immigrate to Medina after he entered Islam, so Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) returned his wife Zainab (may Allah be pleased with her) to him.

Zainab did not live long after her husband entered Islam as she died in the eighth year after Hijrah.

When she died, she left her young daughter Umamah, who Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to carry on his shoulders when he prayed, and used to place her on the ground when he performed prostration until he had finished the prayer. After the prayer, he used to carry her again.

Zainab’s daughter Umamah married Ali ibn Abu Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) after his wife Fatima died, and Ali died when he was still married to Umamah. After that she married Al-Mugheerah ibn Naufal.

2. Ruqayyah bint Muhammad

(who immigrated twice)

Ruqayyah was born seven years before Prophet Muhammed’s prophethood.

She married Uthman ibn Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) and immigrated with him to Abyssinia after the polytheists increased the harm they were causing to the Muslims and the severity of the torture they used against them.

Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) and his wife Ruqayyah were among the first group of Muslims who immigrated to Abyssinia to protect their religion. Ruqayyah gave birth to her son, Abdullah, in Abyssinia, and after some time Uthman and his wife Ruqayyah returned to Mecca with a group of Muslims who had also immigrated to Abyssinia.

However, Ruqayyah did not remain long in Mecca as she soon immigrated again with her husband Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) to Medina.

After that, she had to face the difficulty of the death of her son Abdullah when he was six years old.

Later, Ruqayyah (may Allah be pleased with her) caught a fever, so her husband Uthman (may Allah be pleased with her) stayed with her to look after her while the Muslims left for the battle of Badr. Uthman was unable to join them as Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) had ordered him to stay with his wife Ruqayyah. At the same time Zaid ibn Haritha returned with the news that the Muslims had won at Badr, Ruqayyah (may Allah be pleased with her) died.

3.Umm Kulthum bint Muhammed

Umm Kulthum was born six years before Prophet Muhammad’s prophethood. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) married Umm Kulthum to Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) after her sister Ruqayyah had died; Umm Kulthum was the second daughter of the Prophet who married Uthman. For this reason, Uthman was called the Posessor of Two Lights.

Umm Kulthum remained with Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) until Umm Kulthum died in Shaban of the ninth year after Hijrah, although she did not have any children from him. Umm Kulthum was buried next to her sister Ruqayyah (may Allah be pleased with them both).

4. Fatima bint Muhammed (Az-Zahrah)

Fatima was the youngest daughter of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Fatima was born five years before Prophet Muhammad’s prophethood.

Fatima (may Allah be pleased with her) helped her father withstand the harm he suffered from the people of Quraish. Whenever Fatima entered Prophet Muhammad’s rooms, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) would stand to kiss her and make her sit with him. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) loved her so much that he said,

Fatima is a part of me, so anyone who annoys her annoys me related by Al-Bukhari.

Fatima married Ali ibn Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) in the second year after Hijrah. She (may Allah be pleased with her) gave birth to her children: Al-Hassan, then Al-Hussain, Zainab and Umm Kulthum. Fatima (may Allah be pleased with her) witnessed the death of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), but then joined him six months after his death on the second of Ramadan, eleven years after Hijrah. She was buried in Baqi’ graveyard.

All the daughters of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) were from Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her), were born before Islam, and then entered Islam.
