Prophet Muhammad's names and merits in the Quran

Prophet Muhammad's names and merits in the Quran

Prophet Muhammed’s names in the Quran

Allah (Glorified is He) raised the remembrance of Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him) in the Quran and praised him in many places in the Noble Book. How could this not be the case when Allah (Glorified is He) says, {Allah knows best where to place His Message} [Surah Al-Anam: 124] Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him) is mentioned in the Glorious Quran by the term “Messenger” in 53 places, the term “Messenger of Allah” in 13 places, “Prophet” in 31 places, “Our Messenger” in 4 places, “Muhammed” in 4 places, and “Our slave” in 2 places…Below are some of the ayahs (verses) in which Allah (Glorified is He) mentions the Prophet (peace be upon him). Allah (Glorified is He) mentions the name “Muhammed” in the Glorious Quran four times, in His saying, {Muhammad is only a Messenger and he has been preceded by other Messengers} [Surah Al-Imran: 144] {Muhammad is not the father of any of your men} [Surah Al-Ahzab: 40] {…and believe in what has been sent down to Muhammad—and it is the truth from their Lord} [Surah Muhammed: 2] {Muhammed is the Messenger of Allah} [Surah Al-Fath: 29] Allah (Glorified is He) says about ‘Isaa (Jesus), {[Jesus, the son of Mary, said, ‘…] and giving you the good news of a Messenger after me whose name is Ahmad’} [Surah As-Saff: 6] And He mentions the name “Ahmad” once when talking about Prophet ‘Isaa (peace be upon him), {[Jesus, son of Mary, said, ‘…] and giving you the good news of a Messenger after me whose name is Ahmad’} [Surah As-Saff: 6] Some of his characteristics that indicate his perfect character are mentioned in many ayahs, for example:

1-Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him) was eager that people would be guided

Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him) was very eager that all the people, without exception, would be guided. He (peace be upon him) wanted to move them from darkness into light, being so concerned about them that Allah (Glorified is He) felt sorry for him and wanted to calm him, saying, {Perhaps you will destroy yourself with grief because they will not believe} [Surah Ash-Shuraa: 3] And also says, {Perhaps you may destroy yourself with grief, chasing after them, if they do not believe in these words} [Surah Kahf: 6]

2-Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him) was the Prophet of mercy

One of the clearest character traits of Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him) is that he was the Prophet of mercy, not just to his nation, but to all the world: mankind, jinn, Muslims and disbelievers. Allah (Glorified is He) says, {We did not send you but as a mercy to the worlds} [Surah Al-Anbiya: 107]

3-Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him) was gentle and friendly, he (peace be upon him) was not rough

Some of Prophet Muhammed’s character traits that Allah mentioned in His Book is that he (peace be upon him) was gentle with the people, not rude or harsh, indicating that he dealt well with all his Companions and was compassionate and kind to them. Allah (Glorified is He) says, {It is a mercy from Allah that you were gentle with them. If you had been rough or hard of heart, they would have scattered from around you. So pardon them and ask forgiveness for them} [Al-Imran: 159]

4-Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him) paid attention to anyone who talked to him

Allah (Glorified is He) says, {There are others who insult the Prophet by saying, ‘He will listen to anything.’ Say, ‘He listens for your own good: he believes in Allah, trusts the believers, and is a mercy for those of you who believe’} [Surah Al-Tawbah: 61]

5-Prophet Muhammed’s concern for the believers

Allah (Glorified is He) says, {A Messenger has come to you from among yourselves. Your suffering distresses him; he is deeply concerned for you; he is gentle and merciful to the believers} [Surah Al-Tawbah: 128] that is, due to his love and care for you. He often worried that a rule might be difficult for you if it was made obligatory, so he would not do it, as this would mean you would not receive rewards and would deserve to be punished. That is, he (peace be upon him) was concerned about your belief as he (peace be upon him) was kind and compassionate to you

6-Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him) is an excellent example for us to follow in all our lives

Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him) had such an excellent character that he (peace be upon him) could be a guide for anyone who wanted to be good and to be guided and righteous by following his example: {You have an excellent model in the Messenger of Allah, for all who put their hope in Allah and the Last Day, and remember Allah much} [Surah Al-Ahzab: 21]

7-Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him) guides to the straight path

Allah (Glorified is He) described the Prophet (peace be upon him) as guiding those who follow him to the straight path, the path of truth that reaches Allah and His pleasure, a path which has no bends in it. Allah (Glorified is He) says, {Truly, you guide to a straight path} [Surah Ash-Shura: 52] Allah (Glorified is He) also says, {Doing that causes annoyance to the Prophet, though he is too reticent to tell you so} [Surah Al-Ahzab: 53]

8-Prophet Muhammed’s polite character and modesty

Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him) was never hesitant in making the truth clear at any time, but for some matters that concerned only him, personally, his polite character and modesty made him (peace be upon him) shy to stop someone from what he is doing, or to interrupt someone who was speaking. Allah (Glorified is He) says, {O you who believe, do not go into the Prophet´s rooms except when you are invited to come and eat. Do not wait there while the food is being cooked. However, when you are called, go in, and when you have eaten, disperse, not remaining there to chat with one another. Doing that causes annoyance to the Prophet, though he is too reticent to tell you so. But Allah is not reticent concerning the truth} [Surah Al-Ahzab: 53]

9-Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him) was protected from any person harming him

Allah protected the Prophet (peace be upon him) from any person harming him—after his Companions used to guard him—in order for him to be able to spread the Message. Allah (Glorified is He) says, {O Messenger, transmit what has been sent down to you from your Lord. If you do not do it you will not have transmitted His Message. Allah will protect you from the people. Allah does not guide the people who disbelieve} [Surah Al-Ma’idah: 67]

10-Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him) was supported by revelation and protected from misguidance

The Glorious Quran told us that the Prophet (peace be upon him) did not act or speak of his own accord. The source of what he said was divine revelation. He (peace be upon him) had been preserved from misguidance and from going astray as he (peace be upon him) was supported by revelation. Allah (Glorified is He) says, {Your companion is not misguided or misled; nor does he speak from his own desire. It is nothing but revelation revealed, taught to him by one immensely strong} [Surah An-Najm: 2-5]

11-Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him) was an unlettered Prophet

Allah says, {those who follow the Messenger, the unlettered Prophet} [Surah Al-Araf: 157] Allah also says, {So believe in Allah and His Messenger, the unlettered Prophet, who believes in Allah and His words, and follow him so that hopefully you will be guided} [Surah Al-Araf: 158] Allah described the Prophet with this description (being illiterate) in the Quran, being a state that was prevalent for most of the Arabs at that time as they were an illiterate nation that did not know how to read or write. Allah (Glorified is He) says, {It is He who raised up among the unlettered people a Messenger from them to recite His signs to them and purify them, and teach them the Book and wisdom} [Surah Al-Jumu’ah: 2] This fact proves that he (peace be upon him) was a Prophet as he brought the miraculous Quran, which is miraculous in its eloquence and with regards to the scientific details it states, although he (peace be upon him) was illiterate, being unable to read or write

12-Prophet Muhammed’s eagerness to worship his Lord

Allah (Glorified is He) says, {Your Lord knows that you stay up nearly two-thirds of the night — or half of it, or a third of it} [Surah Al-Muzammil: 20]. Allah also says, {TaHa. We did not send down the Qur´an to you to make you miserable} [Surah TaHa: 1-2]

13-Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him) is the owner of the Kawthur (abundant blessings)

Allah (Glorified is He) says, {Truly We have given you Al-Kawthar [the Great Abundance]. So pray to your Lord and perform sacrifice. It is the one who hates you who is cut off without an heir} [Surah Al-Kawthar: 1-3] Al-Kawthur is a river in paradise

14-Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him) was a human being who received revelation

Allah (Glorified is He) says, {Say [O Prophet Muhammed], ´I am only a human being like yourselves who has received revelation. Your god is One God} [Surah Al-Kahf: 110] Allah also says, {Say [O Prophet Muhammed], ´I am only a human being like yourselves. It is revealed to me that your god is One God. So take the straight path to Him and ask His forgiveness.´ Woe to those who associate others with Him} [Surah Fussilat: 6] He (peace be upon him) is a human being, and so it is not permissible to describe him with any of the divine traits

15-Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him) will be a witness for all those who will be called to witness about others

Allah (Glorified is He) says, {How will it be when We bring a witness from every nation and bring you as a witness against them?} [Surah An-Nisaa: 41] that is, on the Resurrection Day.

16-Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him) is the light for all the world

Allah (Glorified is He) says, {And a caller to Allah by His permission, and a light-giving lamp} [Surah Al-Ahzab: 46]

17-Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him) is convincing evidence

Allah (Glorified is He) says, {O mankind, convincing evidence has come to you from your Lord. We have sent down a clear light to you} [Surah An-Nisaa: 174]

18-Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him) was an orphan

Allah (Glorified is He) says, pointing out His favours on the Prophet (peace be upon him) {Did He not find you an orphan and shelter you?} [Surah Ad-Duha: 6]

19-Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him) was a witness to Truth, a bringer of good tidings and a warner

Allah (Glorified is He) says, { O Prophet, We have sent you as a witness (to the Truth), and a bringer of good news and a warner} [Surah Al-Ahzab: 45]

20-Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him) brought a legislation that must be used among the believers, and it is obligatory to obey him

Allah (Glorified is He) says, {O you who believer, obey Allah and obey the Messenger and those in command among you. If you have a dispute about something, refer it back to Allah and the Messenger, if you believe in Allah and the Last Day. That is the best thing to do and gives the best result} [Surah An-Nisaa: 59] Allah (Glorified is He) also says, {No, by your Lord, they are not believers until they make you their judge in the disputes that break out between them, and then find no resistance within themselves to what you decide and submit themselves completely} [Surah An-Nisaa: 65] Therefore, the one who does not obey the Prophet, does not follow the Prophet’s rulings in his wordly affairs, and is not pleased with Allah’s rulings is considered as not believing in Islam.

21-Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him) was sent to all the world

Allah informed us that the Prophet (peace be upon him) was sent to all the world (both jinn and mankind), and that his Message was for all the world, not just the Arabs. Allah stressed this in many ayahs (verses) in the Quran, for example: His saying, {Say [O Prophet Muhammed], ‘O mankind, I am the Messenger of Allah to you all} [Surah Al-Araf: 158] And also His saying, {Blessed be He who has sent down the Criterion (of right and wrong) to His slave so that he can be a warner to all beings} [Surah Al-Furqan: 1] And His saying, {We have sent you to mankind as a Messenger. And Allah is sufficient as a Witness} [Surah An-Nisaa: 79] as well as His (Glorified is He) saying, {This is a clear explanation for all mankind, and guidance and admonition for those who fear Allah} [Surah Al-Imran: 138] His (Glorified is He) saying, {It is He who sent His Messenger with guidance and the religion of Truth to exalt it over every other religion, even though the polytheists detest it} [Surah At-Tawbah: 33] and His saying, {It is He who sent His Messenger with the Guidance and the religion of Truth to exalt it over every other religions, and Allah is sufficient as a witness} [Surah Al-Fath: 28] Every Prophet was sent to a nation or a particular period of time, but Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him) was sent to all the world, mankind and jinn, bringing guidance for all time until the Resurrection Day, as there will be no Prophet after him (peace be upon him). Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him) was the greatest example throughout history of a moral lifestyle [Truly, Muhammed, peace be upon him, had a special ability of explaining things clearly and his religion was easy. He performed acts that amazed the mind and history has not recorded any reformer that awakens the souls, revives the morals and raise values in such a short period of time as Muhammed, the Prophet of Islam, did] William Muir Scottish orientalist

22-Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him) has great manners

The Prophet (peace be upon him) reached the height of good manners with all members of the society: the polytheists, the disbelievers, the hypocrites and the believers. Allah (Glorified is He) says, {Indeed, you have a high moral character} [Surah Al-Qalam: 4] He was praised with the greatest words of praise, and if there were greater words of praise than these, he would have been praised with them. The word ‘manners’ has also been explained as meaning ‘religion’. that is, on a great religion. Considering both meanings, he (peace be upon him) had great manners and abided by the religion to a great extent.

23-Allah and the angels send prayers on Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him), and we have been ordered to send prayers on him.

As a way of honouring and ennobling Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him), Allah and the angels send prayers on him. Allah (Glorified is He) says, {Allah and His angels send blessings on the Prophet. O you who believe, send blessings on him and ask for complete peace and safety for him} [Surah Al-Ahzab: 56] Allah sending prayers on Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him) is a form of mercy on him (peace be upon him). The angels sending prayers on him (peace be upon him) means that they ask for him to receive mercy and for his level to be raised. This news that prayers are sent on Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him) was then followed by an order for the believers to send prayers on him (peace be upon him). Allah (Glorified is He) says, {Allah and His angels send blessings on the Prophet. O you who believe, send blessings on him and ask for complete peace and safety for him} [Surah Al-Ahzab: 56] Oh Allah, send prayers, peace and blessings on Prophet Muhammed and his family and Companions

24-Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him) was the bravest of people

Allah (Glorified is He) informed us about this. One incident for which He (Glorified is He) described the Prophet’s bravery was when the Prophet’s Companions left the Prophet during the battle of Uhud. However, the Prophet remained alone on the battlefield, calling the Companions to return. Allah (Glorified is He) says, {Remember when you were scrambling up the slope, refusing to turn back for anyone, and the Messenger was calling to you from the rear. Allah rewarded you with one distress in return for another [distress]} [Surah Al-Imran: 153]

25-Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him) had all his past and future sins forgiven

Allah (Glorified is He) said He has totally forgiven Prophet Muhammed’s past and future sins, as a blessing for him. Allah (Glorified is He) says, {So that Allah may forgive you your earlier errors and any later ones, and complete His blessing upon you, and guide you on a Straight Path} [Surah Al-Fath: 2]

26-Obeying Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him) means obeying Allah (Glorified is He)

In the Glorious Quran, Allah clarifies that obeying Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him) means obeying Allah. Allah (Glorified is He) says, {Whoever obeys the Messenger has obeyed Allah. If anyone turns away, We did not send you to them as their keeper} [Surah An-Nisaa: 80] To summarize….. In the Glorious Quran, Allah mentions Prophet Muhammed’s name clearly, as well as his description and good qualities with this large number of ayahs (verses) to highlight his high position and extraordinary level and status he had in Allah’s eyes. This reference also indicates that it is an honour for us to be one of the followers of this seal of the Prophets (peace be upon him) who Allah (Glorified is He) chose as a close friend, who, alone, will be able to ask for the Great Intercession (on the Resurrection Day), and whose nation He (Glorified is He) made the best nation brought forth for the people. May the prayers of my Lord as well as His peace, greetings and blessings be on His elected Prophet and chosen beloved at all times.
